Assuming you would like the scientific answer to this question:

There are many possible causes of skin pigmentation, including sun exposure, certain medications, and hormonal changes. Skin pigmentation can also be the result of a medical condition, such as Addison’s disease or vitiligo.

What are the Top Skincare Ingredients to Treat Pigmentation?

Here are some of the best skincare ingredients to look for when trying to even out your skin tone:

1. Vitamin C:

This one goes without saying as it is the holy grail in ANY skincare product EVER! Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help brighten your complexion and even out your skin tone by fading dark spots and discoloration. It’s also beneficial for protecting your skin from environmental damage and boosting collagen production.

In addition, vitamin C has excellent anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. Need to say more? Vitamin C is one of your most valued elements for healthy, glowing skin! If you struggle with pigmentation, our Swipe Bright Brightening Super Oil is the product for you. If you have combination to oily skin, the super oil is a MUST HAVE as it helps reduce oiliness and leaves your skin luminous and radiant.

If you prefer an elegant and powerfully penetrating cream, then we recommend C Bright.

2. Niacinamide:

Niacinamide is another ingredient that’s great for evening out skin tone. It’s a form of vitamin B3, an essential nutrient whose deficiency can lead to skin, kidney and brain problems. It works by inhibiting melanin production, which helps to fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It’s also an anti-inflammatory, so it can help calm down any redness or irritation. According to studies, niacinamide also helps minimise those pesky pores and enhances your skin’s texture, fostering skin elasticity and reducing skin’s redness and blotchiness.

The ultimate daily moisture boosted serum that restores skin health and radiance is our Let it B Hydrating Serum. It’s suitable for all skin types so whether you have dry, combination or oily skin, this baby improves daily hydration and balance sebum production. It’s also available in eco-friendly refills meaning it’s just as good for the environment as it is for your skin.

3. Glycolic Acid:

If you want to avoid dull skin, then your skincare routine could benefit from our friend over here… glycolic acid, thanks to its ability to buff away dead skin cells. Glycolic acid is a type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that’s often used in skincare products for its exfoliating properties. It can help brighten your complexion and even out your skin tone by sloughing off dead skin cells and revealing brighter, more evenly-toned skin underneath.

It’s also an excellent ingredient for improving overall skin texture, minimises scars and improves the appearance of acne. It’s one of the most diverse AHAs and helps to clear bacteria from the pores. Speaking of AHA, our One Night Stand AHA Overnight Facial is the ultimate treatment to address pigmentation, uneven skin tone and aging.  A potent 15% glycolic acid works to brighten and resurface your face, while nourishing and skin tightening ingredients work their magic too. Trust us when we say it’s the only one night stand you won’t regret.

4. Retinol

If you’re a skincare geek like us, you’ve probably heard of retinols before. Retinol is a powerful ingredient that can help to even out your skin tone. It can be found in many skincare products, and it works by increasing cell turnover and stimulating collagen production. This helps to diminish the appearance of dark spots and acne scars, and it can also help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Retinol is a great choice for those who are looking for a powerful skincare ingredient that can help to improve the overall appearance of their skin.

Retinols are a really common ingredient in creams and serums designed to help combat visible signs of aging. They’re also a life saviour when it comes to regulating your skin’s oil production. So there are many reasons to incorporate retinol in your routine even before we’ve covered pigmentation!

5. Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Alpha hydroxy acids aka AHAs are a group of natural acids that are derived from fruits. They have the ability to exfoliate the top layer of skin, revealing the brighter, more even-toned skin beneath. AHAs are a popular choice for treating sun damage, uneven skin texture, and wrinkles.

There are different types of AHAs, including glycolic acid, lactic acid, and citric acid. Each type has its own unique benefits. For example, glycolic acid is the smallest molecule in the group and can penetrate deeply into the skin. Lactic acid is good for brightening and exfoliation, while citric acid can help with dullness and uneven skin texture.

AHA’s offer almost instant gratification as it instantly refreshes your skin. However, as with most skincare products including any exfoliants, AHAs do have their downsides. An AHA (like glycolic acid) has a small molecule that penetrates the skin more deeply. This can cause possible sun sensitivity, peeling and irritation for dry or sensitive skin types.

AHAs can be found in skincare products in various forms, such as serums, creams, peels, and masks. The concentration of AHAs in a product will determine how strong of an exfoliating effect it will have. A higher concentration will provide better results but may also cause more irritation. We have our own AHA Brightening Cleanser called the Walk of Shine that is an effective dual cleanser and exfoliant that gets down and dirty and leaves your skin sparkling clean.

6. Beta Hydroxy Acids

Beta Hydroxy acids aka BHAs are a type of exfoliating acid that is commonly used in skincare products to improve the appearance of your skin. It works by removing dead skin cells (gross) and unclogs your pores, which can help to improve the overall texture and tone of your skin.

BHA is also known for its ability to improve the appearance of pigmentation. This is because it helps to even out skin tone by removing surface level hyperpigmented cells and reveals brighter, healthier skin underneath.

When it comes to using BHA to combat pigmentation, it is important to select a product with the perfect amount of concentration of BHA for your skin type. It is also important to use a high quality BHA product because lower quality products may contain harsh ingredients that can irritate the skin.

What’s more, it is essentially a BIG DEAL that when using any BHA products, to protect your skin from further damage from the sun, as UV radiation can worsen hyperpigmentation. So listen up ladies and gentlemen, this means wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30+ everyday including those cloudy days. We recommend, The Future 50+.
