HOW TO CHOOSE AN EYE CREAM

We interviewed Dr Naomi about eye creams:

So many people like to joke that eye creams are a “scam”-  why is that?

Maybe it’s because there’s a spectrum of effectiveness and quality in eye creams. From a formulations point of view, for cosmeceutical products, their whole purpose is being active and creating visible change in the skin.

What are the benefits of using eye cream?

When we formulated our eye cream, Catfish, we had 2 main purposes, the first was to create an immediate blurring effect, so users could see results from the first application. We also wanted the secondary benefit of improvement of the skin in the longer term, improving dark circles, fine lines and skin texture. We also formulated it to be a good makeup primer.

What is the best way to apply eye cream (eg am/pm, skincare order, application technique)?

Twice daily is ideal. For blurring eye creams, they’re great to apply in the morning, as users want the blurring effect all day, rather than during sleep. For skincare order, we recommend to cleanse and use serums and then apply eye cream. For our eye cream application we recommend dotting it under the eye on the lower lid and gently across the brow bone. One thing I’ve noticed on social media when I see people posting their application of our eye cream is they’re using way too much product. Some are using about 3 times the amount required or more!

What ingredients are best for eye creams?

Hyaluronic acid and antioxidants are fantastic.  Brightening ingredients like niacinamide are important for this area to help improve dark circles. Wrinkle smoothing ingredients are popular of course, for crows feet and under-eye crepiness.  Some of the antiwrinkle ingredients that we chose were Kangaroo Paw Flower extract and Hexapeptide 8. Soothing and conditioning of this delicate eye area is vital, so we use ingredients like shea butter and Vitamen E for that purpose.

Are there any skincare ingredients to avoid putting near your eyes?

Fragrances and perfumes can cause problems to the eye area. We love actives, but care is needed when using them on the delicate and fine skin near the eyes eg retinol. Please use skincare for its designed purpose.  If a skincare product is not designed to be used around the eyes then don’t use it there. Concentrations of ingredients are also important around the eyes.  Certain ingredients in sunscreens can be irritating to the eyes for some people. These users need to find a sunscreen that works for them.
